Our Goal and Our Team

Our Goal

Our 501(c)(3) Non-profits goal is to help provide kids nowadays with the proper protective equipment to allow them to pursue their favorite hobbies, like skating and biking while placing more value on their safety and protection, and the importance of taking these precautions.

Thomas de Torsiac

Hello, my name is Thomas de Torsiac, and I am the founder of Helmets for Kids. I'm an 18-year-old senior at La Jolla High School with the goal of making San Diego a better environment for skaters and bikers like me. When I was engaged in a serious skateboarding accident in 2016 that landed me in the hospital, I was thankful for my helmet, which took the majority of the hit. This incident showed me the importance of wearing protective gear and how little control children have over whether or not they do so. My objective is to utilize my prior experiences to not only persuade children of the significance of protective equipment but also to offer it to underprivileged children whose parents do not understand that helmets are essential.

Alejandro Abitia-Neves

Hello, my name is Alejandro Abitia-Neves. I am 18 and native to San Diego and am currently attending San Diego Mesa College. In 2016, I witnessed Thomas’s accident in which he could’ve lost his life if it hadn’t been for his helmet. This gave me a deep appreciation for the lifesaving quality that helmets and protective equipment provide as they saved my friend’s life. Now, further down the line, and living in City Heights-an underprivileged community in San Diego where young children skate and bike in the middle of the streets without protective gear-has given me a realization that without outside assistance, these innocent children will continue to unknowingly risk their lives.
