Issues At Hand

As sports like skating and biking become more prevalent so do the injuries

Statistics

Skateboarding

According to a 2017 NCBI study, out of 1742 patients under the age of 18, 51.1 percent were skaters and 48.9% were snowboarders, and all of them were admitted to the hospital with sports-related injuries. Of those persons, 52% said they didn't wear a helmet during the accident, and 40% of the total patients had brain injuries as a result of not wearing a helmet.

The study found that there was a heavy correlation between the lack of helmet use and the prevalence of head injury. The NCBI issued a statement that stated it was necessary for outreach programs to be created to increase helmet use across the world.

Bicycling

From 2012-2013 the IIHS surveyed the fatality rates in cyclists over 16 in relation to their helmet use. It was found that of the total 64% and 62% of the 730 fatal crashes in 2012 and 747 crashes in 2013 weren’t Wearing helmets. The helmet users only had a 17% fatality rate.

Another study published by the National Trauma Data Bank found that during the 2019 year there were 76,032 bicyclists with neck and head injuries. Of those injured, only 22% reported wearing a helmet during the time of the crash.
